Magnetic moment of. beta. -emitting /sup 27/Si

Polarized ..beta..-emitting /sup 27/Si nuclei (I/sup ..pi../ = (5/2)/sup +/, T/sub 1/2/ = 4.1 s) were produced in the reaction /sup 27/Al(p, n)/sup 27/Si, E/sub p/ = 8.5 MeV, in a thick single crystal of sapphire (Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/) which also served as host for the implanted /sup 27/Si nuclei. The polarization transferred to the /sup 27/Si nuclei was observed by measuring the ..beta..-decay asymmetry parallel to the proton polarization. The /sup 27/Si polarization was preserved during the nuclear lifetime by a magnetic holding field and by cooling the host crystal. The magnetic dipole moment of /sup 27/Si, measured by a nuclear magnetic resonance technique, is Vertical Bar..mu..Vertical Bar = (0.8554(4))..mu../sub N/. This result includes the diamagnetic shielding correction.
