Alternative strategies for control of sulfur dioxide emissions

Journal Article · · J. Air Pollut. Control Assoc.; (United States)
Low S western coal burning, flue gas desulfurization, and intermittent control systems were compared for use by coal-fired steam electric plants to achieve ambient air quality standards for sulfur dioxide. The desired air quality goals can be achieved using the intermittent control strategy with substantially less impact on the environment, less consumption of energy, and at a much lower cost than using either stack gas scrubbing or low-S coal.
