Manitoba possesses abundant hydro power potential which, when fully developed, will provide the province with sufficient energy into the 1990's. The Nelson River will be the focus of this development; its steady volume of flow coupled with a gradient of approximately 214 meters over a distance of 660 kilometers and its relative accessibility to the populated South make it one of the most desirable remaining sources of hydroelectric power in North America. However, there are serious environmental obstacles to overcome where the river is being developed. The potential generation of 14 stations planned for the Nelson River, two of which--Kelsey and Kettle--are now complete, is 8270 MW, but to achieve this level of output requires diversion of the Churchill River and regulation of Lake Winnipeg.
