A discussion based on a National Academy of Engineering study covers the conservation measures that might reduce unconstrained energy demand from 58 to 49 to 50 million bbl/day oil equivalent by 1985; the ''feasible'' programs for meeting energy demand by 1985 (i.e., increase coal production by twofold; increase nuclear power capacity to one-third of total electrical capacity; double present domestic oil and gas capacity to increase output by 25 percent net; use new technologies to produce 1.1 and 0.6 million bbl/day of synthetic gas and liquids, respectively, from coal and 0.5 million bbl/day of oil from shale; and small increases in hydroelectric and geothermal power usage); the likely prospect of oil imports of about 8 to 10 million bbl/day, costing $50 to $60 billion/yr, by 1980 in addition to these programs; the need for extensive manpower training programs to carry out these programs by 1985; and the role of the economy in the energy/environmental situation.
