In 1985, petroleum, natural gas, coal, hydroelectric power, and nuclear power will supply 38, 26, 19, 2, and 14 percent, respectively, of U.S. power and 41, 10, 40, 2 and 0 percent, respectively, of non-U.S. power. U.S. energy consumption, growing at 3 percent/yr, will grow from 32 million bbl/day of oil equivalent (OE) in 1970 to 50 million bbl/day OE in 1985. Consumption in the rest of the world (ROW) will grow at 5 percent/yr, from 55 million bbl/day OE in 1970 to 114 million bbl/day OE in 1985. Capital requirements (in billions of 1975 dollars) for exploration/production, refining, transportation, exploration (expensed), and marketing, and other activities will be 118, 30, 25, 30, and 45, respectively, in the U.S. and 75, 70, 60, 50, and 45, respectively, in ROW in 1971-85. Requirements for the production and storage, transportation, and other activities of natural gas will be 50, 36, and 24, respectively, in the U.S. and 60, 50, and 15, respectively, in ROW in 1971-85. U.S. requirements for coal and its gasification and liquefaction will be 9.7, 4.8, and 2.5, respectively, over the period.
