For irradiation of an i.c. having a high sensitivity (for example a UMI-93) with neutrons, a background is observed in the form of brightpoint flashes. It is shown that this background is caused by the incidence of ..cap alpha.. particles from (n,..cap alpha..) reactions involving the elements /sup 10/B and /sup 16/O that are included in the composition of the vessel glass on the phosphor of the first intensification stage. The sensitivity of the i.c. to background amounted to: eta/sub T/ = 3 x 10/sup -3/ flashes . cm/sup 2//neutron for thermal neutrons and eta/sub f/ = 1.5 x 10/sup -4/ flashes . cm/sup 2//neutron for fast neutrons (for an i.c. fabricated from S-95-2 glass).
