The (..cap alpha.., n) reaction on /sup 9/Be has long been used to produce neutrons by means of radioisotopes. The authors have improved the sensitivity by measuring coincidences between the 4.439 MeV ..gamma.. rays and the neutrons from /sup 9/Be(..cap alpha.., n)/sup 12/C. We used a /sup 210/Po ..cap alpha.. source of output 3 x 10/sup 8/ sec/sup -1/ deposited on stainless steel of thickness 4 mm as a patch of diameter 7 mm. The active layer was coated with 270 ..mu..g/cm/sup 2/ of Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ to prevent the specimens and the walls of the chamber from being contaminated with polonium. The distance between the source and the specimen was 1 mm, and the air was not evacuated from the chamber. The chamber was placed between two scintillation counters containing bismuth germanate single crystals (diameter 8 cm, height 5 cm, distance between them 0.8 cm), which were placed within the sensitive volume of a neutron detector containing 56 counters filled with /sup 3/He. The probability of recording a single neutron was 0.48.
