High-velocity gas in supernova remnants. III. The Monoceros loop

Interstellar lines in 25 stars in the direction of the optically faint supernova remnant known as the Monoceros Loop were observed. Absorption features with velocities of +69 and -31 km s/sup -1/ (with respect to the local standard of rest) were found, each in one star, and attributed to the expanding gas of the remnant. Low-velocity gas at +10, +6.5, and -11 km s/sup -1/ was mapped throughout the area. The expansion velocity of 50 km s/sup -1/ is in remarkably good agreement with that found by T. A. Lozinskaya from H..cap alpha.. interferograms. The data for the Monoceros Loop is compared with that for other supernova remnants, and it is found that it forms a continuation of the age sequence of Vela XYZ, the Cygnus Loop, and Shajn 147. An age greater than 15 x 10/sup 4/ yr is estimated for the Monoceros Loop.
