Analysis of the kinematics of old optical supernova remnants yields a mean energy E/sub 0/3.7 = +- 1.5 x 10/sup 50/ erg for the envelope at the time of ejection, implying a mass of approx. = 0.3 M/sub sun/ for the material thrown off in a type I outburst (V/sub 0/ = 10/sup 4/ km/sec) and 1 to 2 M/sub sun/ for a type II supernova (V/sub 0/5 = -7 x 10/sup 3/ km/sec). In an effort to ascertain the types of supernovae involved, the physical relationship of remnants with gas-dust complexes and OB associations is studied. The optical remnants IC 443, the Monoceros Loop, the faint shell W1, W28, Vela X, and possibly HB 3 were evidently formed through type II supernova outbursts, with intensive mass loss late in the evolution of the star. The problem posed by the evolution of Shklovskii's plerions is discussed; as the central source decays, a plerion may turn into a classical shell radion remnant.
