Oxygen diffusion current was measured in the C3HBA mammary adenocarcinoma with a platinum microelectrode. An intraperitoneal injection of 0.6 mg/g body weight of metronidazole caused an increase in the oxygen diffusion current of roughly two and one-half times within 60 min after injection. The same tumor was also found to be more radiosensitive when metronidazole was given prior to treatment with x rays. The TCD/sub 50/'s at 60 days after treatment were reduced by factors of 1.32 and 1.35 if the animals were injected with 0.6 and 0.3 mg/g, respectively, of metronidazole 30 min prior to irradiation. The higher dose of 0.6 mg/g was more effective than 0.3 mg/g at both 4000 and 5000 rad of x rays as determined by the number of tumor cures at 90 days after treatment.
