Uranium and thorium decay series nuclides in plankton from the Caribbean

Journal Article · · Limnol. Oceanogr.; (United States)
Zooplankton (predominantly calanoids and cyclopoids) from the Caribbean were analyzed for /sup 238/U, /sup 234/U, /sup 232/Th, /sup 228/Th, /sup 228/Ra, /sup 226/Ra, /sup 210/Pb, and /sup 210/Po. The concentration factor in the zooplankton relative to seawater is highest for /sup 210/Po. /sup 210/Pb and /sup 228/Th have similar concentration factors and are comparable (when normalized to /sup 226/Ra) to reported fiber-scavenging experimental data on /sup 210/Pb and /sup 234/Th. The dominant transport agent for /sup 210/Po and /sup 210/Pb from the mixed layer to depth cannot be unmodified zooplankton debris.
