Gamma radiolysis of aqueous solutions of iminodiacetic acid
Aqueous solutions of iminodiacetic acid (IDA) at various pH were irradiated with cobalt-60 gamma rays both in the presence and in the absence of dissolved oxygen. The radiolytic formation of glycine, hydrogen peroxide, and carbonyl compounds was followed in the system. It has been found that the radiolysis is initiated through hydrogen abstraction by H and OH from the carbon atom ..cap alpha.. to the -COOH group in the IDA molecule. The dehydrogenated radical intermediate formed as a result disproportionates in the absence of oxygen, but in the presence of oxygen it forms a peroxy compound which subsequently undergoes hydrolysis. From competition kinetic studies with formate or t-butanol the rate constant for the reaction of OH with IDA was determined under various conditions of pH and at pH 13, IDA was found to be most reactive.
