Tugs will soon tow from the drydocks on Scotland's west coast the 455-ft-dia base of the largest concrete offshore oil platform ever constructed. The $200-million structure will rise to a height of 560 ft. At the deepwater site, workers will slipform the upper walls of the 441,000-ton, prestressed platform as the base sinks into the sea. Next summer, a steel deck will be added and the Ninian Central Platform then will be towed to its production site in the North Sea.
