Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. and Public Service Co., of Oklahoma, are now setting their phase distance and ground overcurrent relays with the aid of computer programs. It was found that serious disadvantages exist in using a completely automated program to set ground relays. To achieve coordination of relays, trip times were often set so high that system protection was sacrificed. Their solution was to adopt an interactive approach, which allows an engineer to guide the relay-setting process. The original ground overcurrent-relay program was expanded to set phase distance relays. (MCW)
