In 1971 a 1000-foot, 115-kV direct-buried cable insulated with crosslinked polyethylene was installed at Alabama Power Co.'s Barry station to connect a new 60-MW combustion turbine station with the existing transmission system. Despite damage from mishandling during installation (which was also repaired), a cracked pothead (which has not been replaced yet), and dig-in damage last winter (temporary repairs only, at present) the cable system has performed perfectly. Except for two brief scheduled interruptions, the cable has been continuously energized at 115 kV since it was first placed in operation in November 1971. Brief descriptions of the design and installation of the cable system are given. The operation and maintenance of the system is emphasized to show its rugged, reliable nature.
