Liquid phase and stall preheater

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7320638
Drs. Wilde and Schappert rechecked calculations made in Scholven at an earlier date and found these to be correct. In a 3-phase stall without paste regeneration, the heat requirement was 9.5 x 10/sup 0/ heat units with 34 hairpin coils. The 3-phase stall with paste regeneration had a heat requirement of 6.2 x 10/sup 0/ heat units with 22 hairpin coils. The 4-phase stall wi tons/hr/stall of paste; (2) four stalls with a reaction volume of 150 m/sup 3/ (a) four 4-phase stalls, four 18 m converters, 33 tons/hr/stall of paste; (3) four stalls with a reaction volume of 151 m/sup 3/, (a) three 4-phase stalls, four 18 m and one 15 m converter, 33.6 tons/hr/stall of paste; and (b) one 4-phase stall, one 18 m and three 15 m converters, 30.8 tons/hr/stall of paste. At the time of this report, the arrangement in (3) appeared to be the best system. Total heat consumption would be 7,705,000 k cal/hr. Efficiency of 75.5% would have required 10,100,000 k cal/hr of heat consumption, 2,500 m/sup 3//hr of heating gas with 4,000 k cal/m/sup 3/, 12,500 m/sup 3//hr of air, and 15,000m/sup 3//hr of off-gas. If the circulating heating gas blower was laid out for 150,000m/sup 3//hr (15/sup 0/C, 735 mm) for a static pressure of 300 mm water column, the heating gas outlet temperature, when the inlet temperature was 560/sup 0/C, would have been 407/sup 0/C. The 15,000 m/sup 3//hr of purge gas at 407/sup 0/C constrained 2,030,000 k cal/hr of sensible heat leaving 365,000 k cal/hr for the radiation of the preheater.
