Although the explosion-fatality record for the fiscal year 1944 showed considerable improvement over those of the preceding 4 years, it is still far from creditable, and in view of present knowledge of methods of preventing explosions and fires, such disasters are inexcusable. A number of safety measures designed to prevent coal-mine explosions and fires and metal-mine fires are included in the appendix.
