Coal-mine explosions and coal and metal-mine fires in the United States during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1938

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7307481
Essential data are summarized on 29 explosions that occurred in 11 states including Alaska and resulted in 170 deaths during fiscal year 1938, compared with total of 182 deaths for 4 preceding years. A marked increase in fatalities during 1938 indicates laxity in enforcement of State mining laws and failure to take proper precautions against explosions. Study of contributory causes of explosions has revealed that inadequate or interrupted ventilation is predominant factor. Total number of mine fires (24) during fiscal year about equals average for preceding 8 years, and number of deaths resulting from fires (8) during year was slightly less than average for this period.
