Nuclear radii and magnetic moments of /sup 128//sup ,//sup 131/Ba from high-resolution laser spectroscopy

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
Mass-separated samples of the unstable nuclides /sup 128/Ba(T/sub 1///sub 2/ = 2.4 d) and /sup 131/Ba (T/sub 1///sub 2/ = 11.5 d) have been investigated by means of Doppler-free laser spectroscopy, using cw dye lasers and a well-collimated atomic beam. From isotope shifts and hyperfine structure of the /sup 1/S/sub 0/-/sup 1/P/sub 1/ transition (lambda = 553.6 nm) we obtained the difference of mean-square charge radii delta < r/sup 2/ > (/sup 131/Ba-/sup 130/Ba) = - 0.006(3) fm/sup 2/ and delta < r/sup 2/ > (/sup 130/Ba-/sup 128/Ba) = 0.022(3) fm/sup 2/ and the magnetic moment of /sup 131/Ba, ..mu.. = - 0.714(6) ..mu../sub N/.
