Kinetics of the synthesis of methanol from carbon dioxide and hydrogen were studied at a pressure of 50 gauge atmospheres on an SNM-1 copper--zinc--aluminum oxide catalyst in a temperature range of 170 to 240/sup 0/C. It was shown that the observed kinetic regularities of the synthesis of methanol from carbon dioxide and hydrogen cannot be described in the framework of a scheme including formation of carbon monoxide as the intermediate product and the possibility is indicated of the direct synthesis of methanol from CO/sub 2/ and H/sub 2/.
