Genetic evidence for the existence of partial replicas of T4 genomes inactivated by irradiation under ultraviolet light

Multiplicity reactivation of uv-inactivated phages has been studied using two strains carrying a total of 35 markers well distributed along the entire length of the phage T4 genome. Analysis of the clone size distribution of all genotypes in single bursts of bacteria infected with only one phase of each parental type reveals the following two main features: the existence of partial replicas of damaged genomes that reassociate at a late stage in the infection process by recombining primarily at their extremities; and a repair mechanism involving interaction between the early replication products of a single damaged genome.
