Phosphorescence lifetimes are reported for phenanthrene, the five monodeuteriophenanthrenes, and perdeuteriophenanthrene in EPA and 3-methylpentane at 76 K. A significant variation in lifetime with the position of deuteration is noted. The lifetimes in EPA are in the order tau/sub d/sub 0// < tau/sub 2d/sub 1// < tau/sub 1d/sub 1// < tau/sub 3d/sub 1//similarly ordered tau/sub 4d/sub 1// < tau/sub 9d/sub 1/ < tau/sub d/sub 10/. Specifically, the lifetime lengthening upon deuteration at the 2 position is about 1 percent, at the 1, 3, and 4 positions are all about 6 percent, and at the 9 position is about 34 percent. Comparison with other published lifetimes indicates that the deuterium effects are additive. The significance of the results for current theories of radiationless transitions is briefly discussed.
