Deuterium effect on the T/sub 1/-state lifetime of propanal vapor: support for three classes of alkyl aldehydes

Reciprocal lifetimes, extrapolated to zero pressure (tau/sub 0//sup -1/), and rate constants of self-quenching (k/sub q/) for propanal and propanal-d/sub 1/ have been measured with a flash (laser)-sensitized biacetyl phosphorescence technique. Both tau/sub 0//sup -1/ and k/sub q/ decrease with deuteration. The 4.4-fold reduction in tau/sub 0//sup -1/ is intermediate in size and is consistent with a previously proposed classification scheme for alkyl aldehydes and ketones.
