The strategy American Electric Power Company (AEP) has employed for resolving fish entrainment issues during the licensing and relicensing of its hydroelectric projects focuses on biological, engineering and policy aspects. By determining if its projects have a detrimental effect on the in-river fishery and agency fishery management plans, AEP assesses whether mitigation is required. Impacts assessed in this way can be mitigated in the most cost effective manner where required and strongly document the lack of a need for mitigation where impacts do not occur. These aspects of fish entrainment impact assessments are important in AEP's strategy and are discussed in this paper.
