Discussion in Leuna on experiences upon instituting usage of RM10927. [Preheater precipitation problems] (in German)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7307588
The changeover from molybdenum catalyst RM11002 to iron catalyst RM10927 caused difficulties at several liquefaction plants, in the liquid phase. In Leuna, asphalt decomposition became worse. In Welheim, there were difficulties caused by precipitation of solids in the preheater, probably because the new catalyst could not hydrogenate the pitch asphalts at the temperature of the preheater, so the unchanged asphalt precipitated out. (In contrast, RM11002 could bring about hydrogenation even in the preheater.) Leuna had suggested that using three or four times as much of the new catalyst could avoid the precipitation problem, but it had been found in Welheim that such amounts of catalyst produced unmanageable increases in sludge. Finally, there was some discussion about future production and distribution of the two catalysts.
