Tar sands projects stuck

Although four Canadian tar sands projects are in trouble because of rising construction costs, product pricing, and marketing difficulties, Great Canadian Oil Sands Ltd., a Sun Oil Co. subsidiary, has returned a profit on its 51,000 bbl/day facility at Fort McMurray, Alberta. All the projects to date have involved above-ground oil recovery from mined tar sands, but most experts still remain optimistic about in-situ recovery techniques, which can reach the 90 percent or more of the reserves that mining cannot. Alberta has established a five-year, $100 million research and development program to study these techniques.
