Great Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. will increase production to 59,000 bbl/day at its tar sand plant at Fort McMurray. Production is now 13,000 bbl/day. The expansion will include a new bucket excavator and a new production line in the bitumen-processing plant. Great Canadian, which has been assured by the Federal Government that it will now get world prices of about $19/bbl for synthetic crude, reported a first-quarter 1979 profit of $7.2 million and a cumulative deficit of $35 million, compared with $54 million in 1978.
