Average prices of electricity for much of the state of Montana are projected. The analysis was concentrated on the Montana Power Company (MPCo) and the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). In 1974, the Montana Power Company provided 84.6 percent of the sales of electricity to ultimate consumers by privately owned utilities in the state of Montana. However, nearly 45 percent of the total 9.5 billion kWh sold in the state are provided by publicly owned utilities. The rates for public power, largely dominated by BPA, are analyzed. A detailed model and a great deal of empirical data for the MPCo are summarized. The purpose of the analysis is to provide decision makers in government and industry with a reliable forecast of future prices. Findings of the study indicate that real increases in electric rates in Montana will be on the order of 2 percent per year. (MCW)
