A roof bolt bender/inserter was designed and built to install roof bolts in low coal mines where the bolts used are longer than the seam height. The bender/inserter was installed on a Fletcher LTDO roof drill and evaluated in Clinchfield Mine Moss No. 2, near St. Paul, Va. The bender/inserter was designed with a hydraulic motor powered from the roof drill hydraulic system. The unit is controlled from a valve located in the drill control valve bank and can be stopped and restarted anywhere in the bend/insert cycle. The bender/inserter is equipped with a manually operated deployment linkage which allows the inserter to be deployed from its stowed position to a position directly over the lowered drill head, in line with the drilled hole. The bolt with its expansion anchor is inserted into the bender nearly horizontally and the unit bends the anchor end vertically and continuously feeds the bolt into the hole. The bender is released from the bolt by manually reversing the control valve, after which the bender can be manually returned to the stowed position. The bolt is then driven the rest of the way by hand or with the aid of the drill head.
