World oil demand is projected by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology-coordinated Workshop on Alternative Energy Strategies (WAES) to outstrip supplies as early as 1985 and necessitates immediate steps for managing the transition to alternative fuels. An international cooperative effort, WAES has estimated energy demand, domestic energy reserves, and energy surpluses for export on the basis of alternative price, policy, and growth scenarios. Data were integrated for both preferred fuels, which led to imbalances, and for a constrained fuel mix that achieves supply and demand balances based on fuel availability and maximum fuel efficiency. Results of the study pinpoint oil as the critical fuel. Tables summarize the fuel projections for North America, Europe, Japan, non-OPEC developing countries, and OPEC countries. A case study illustrates energy futures in the year 2000 after 25 years of price increases and rapid economic growth. (DCK)
