Analyses of oil extracted from oil-impregnated sandstone deposits in Utah

Assay and distillation analyses of 53 oils extracted from Utah's oil-impregnated sandstone deposits include 27 samples from 16 deposits in the Uinta Basin of northeast Utah and 26 samples from 12 deposits in three general areas of central southeast Utah. The oils vary widely in composition among the deposits and also within individual deposits. Sulfur content varies significantly; tertiary deposits in the Uinta Basin generally yield oils with 0.19 - 0.62 percent sulfur, whereas one sample from Permian rocks in the Uinta Basin and 24 samples from Permian and Triassic rocks in southeast Utah range from 2.94 - 4.36 percent sulfur.
