Overbased branched chain aliphatic sulfonate waterflood
An aqueous overbased surfactant slug was used for tertiary oil recovery. The surfactant was a branched chain aliphatic sulfonate, derived from a non-linear alkene. The term ''overbased surfactant slug'' indicates that the slug contained more sodium hydroxide than was required to neutralize the sulfonic acid precursor of the sulfonate. The ratio of excess base to sulfonate, by weight must be within the range of 0.03 to 2.0. Berea sandstone cores were flooded with sodium chloride brine (5 percent), saturated with 80 Pale-oil, then flooded with brine. Treatment with the overbased surfactant slug produced 8.4 percent PV of residual oil. Additional oil may be recovered by driving the surfactant slug with an aqueous base component mixture. A water-soluble surfactant may be added to the slug if solubility problems arise.
