Method of using overbased sulfonate water flood additive derived from heavy coker gas oil

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7299639
An anionic waterflood additive for enhanced oil recovery was developed by forming sulfonic acids of heavy coker gas oil, which were then neutralized and overbased to about 4 percent excess base. Oil recovery using the anionic additive was much greater than for nonionic and cationic compositions. The overbased composition may be produced in situ by first injecting the sulfonate followed by the base. Additional oil can be recovered by injecting an effective amount of a slug of base into the formation after the overbased slug has been injected. Berea cores were saturated with 5 percent by weight sodium chloride brine, flooded with 80 Pale oil, and waterflooded with the brine. An aqueous slug of the overbased sulfonates recovered about 10 percent PV of residual oil.
