Utility boiler-feed pump design of a high energy package

There has been a rapid growth in the size of the boiler-feed pumps used by this Nation's utilities. Pumps are currently operating in the 40,000-hp range (800-MW station) and will soon be operating in the 70,000-hp range (1300-MW station). The larger pumps, with their accompanying higher overall horsepower ratings and higher energy per stage, produce significant pressure pulsations and vibrations. The factors affecting these pulsations and vibrations, and field test as well as factory test experience in these areas, are discussed.
