The end result of operating a feed water system through severe load transients is often times damage observed in the boiler feed pump. Damage, characterized by wear surface contact is produced as the pump operates in two phase flow or in more extreme cases dry. The classic transient and the effects on boiler feed pumps will be discussed along with the benefits in identifying and correcting the problem. A case study involving the boiler feed pump in a 500 MW power plant is utilized to illustrate this transient behavior and impact on pump performance.
