A process of distilling solid carbonaceous material is described which consists in feeding carbonaceous material simultaneously through a plurality of parallel retorts at different pressures, heating a first retort by superheated steam, passing the resulting vapors through a heat-exchange device that is provided with a supply of water thereby generating another supply of steam at lower pressure, and heating a second retort from the other supply.
