A sodium--halogen battery is disclosed which comprises a casing, an anode positioned in the casing, a solid sodium ion-conductive electrolyte adjacent to the anode, and a cathode positioned adjacent to the opposite side of the solid electrolyte. The anode consists of sodium in a nonaqueous organic electrolyte of pure 1,2-dimethoxyethane containing a dissolved sodium salt, the salt being selected from the class consisting of sodium perchlorate and sodium bromide. 1 figure, 1 table (auth)
