Army Gas-Cooled Reactor Systems Program. Preliminary safety analysis for the ML-1A nuclear power plant

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7292777
This report presents a preliminary analysis of the safety of operation of the ML-1A mobile nuclear power plant. The ML-1A mobile nuclear plant will be operated as a self-sufficient field demonstration unit at one or more sites within the boundaries of the National Reactor Testing Station (NRTS), Idaho. The nuclear and mechanical characteristics of the ML-1A are discussed and an analysis of the safety of operation, maintenance, and transportation (within the NRTS) of the power plant is presented. Hazardous conditions that could result from abnormal operation of the plant or from equipment failure are described and analyzed. The maximum credible accident is considered to result from a sudden large rupture of the circulating gas system and a simultaneous failure of the reactor scram system with subsequent melting of the fuel elements. The downwind hazards resulting from gas loss to the atmosphere are evaluated.
