An internal combustion engine is described which has an engine housing and a reactor for afterburning of unburned constituents in the exhaust gas. The reactor has a shell with a periphery and contains a heat-insulated, reactor chamber which is freely movable beyond the point of connection to the shell. The reactor has an inlet nozzle extending freely through the shell and connected to an outlet passage of the engine and has an outlet for escape of the exhaust gases from the reactor chamber. The inlet nozzle protrudes freely into the outlet passage, and the shell has a portion around the inlet nozzle in contact with the engine housing.
