pi. -p. --> pi. /sup 0/. pi. /sup 0/n and. pi. -p. --> pi. /sup 0/. gamma. n at 270 MeV

Partial cross sections d/sup 4/sigma/d..cap omega../sub 1/d..cap omega../sub 2/dE/sub ..gamma../dE/sub ..gamma../ for ..gamma.. production in the reactions ..pi..-p..--> pi../sup 0/..pi../sup 0/n and ..pi..-p..--> pi../sup 0/..gamma..n are measured with a 4-channel hodoscope of Cherenkov ..gamma.. spectrometers and with scintillation counters. The ..gamma.. spectra for both reactions are obtained at laboratory angles 60/sup 0/, 90/sup 0/, and 120/sup 0/. The cross section for ..pi../sup -/p..--> pi../sup 0/..gamma..n is calculated. The total cross section for ..pi..-p..--> pi../sup 0/..pi../sup 0/n is 0.32 +- 0.04 mb; the total cross section for ..pi..-p..--> pi../sup 0/..gamma..n is 0.33 +- 0.03 mb. An isotopic analysis of the ..pi..N..--> pi pi..N reactions is carried out at 270 MeV. It is shown that in the soft-pion model the total cross sections for ..pi..N..--> pi pi..N cannot be described by any of the considered variants of chiral symmetry breaking.
