Study of the reaction. pi. /sup -/p. --> pi. /sup 0/. pi. /sup 0/n near threshold

An apparatus consisting of a 4-channel hodoscope of Cerenkov ..gamma.. spectrometers and scintillation counters has been used to measure the total cross sections for the reaction ..pi../sup -/p..--> pi../sup 0/..pi../sup 0/n near threshold. The total cross section at an energy T/sub ..pi../=240 MeV is 0.13 +- 0.02 mb, and at T/sub ..pi../=200 MeV, 0.032 +- 0.005 mb. An isotopic analysis of the reactions ..pi..N..--> pi pi..N is carried out at 240 MeV. The ratio of the isotopic amplitudes X=F/sub 10//F/sub 32/ is 3.8 +- 0.6.
