A damper-rod type scrubber for cleaning stack gases resulting from fuel combustion operations is described that provides for the effective removal of the scrubbing action and resulting pressure drop during periods when clean fuels such as natural gas are being used. Several parallel, spaced rods extending transversely across the scrubbing passage are located downstream of the spraying means. Provision is made for rotating the rods 90 deg such that they are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the scrubbing passage, thus effectively removing the rods from the gas passage with respect to cleaning and restricting the flow path.
