Removal of particulate matter from gaseous wastes by wet collectors

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7288034

A scrubbing additive for increasing particle collection efficiency of wet collection devices, particularly venturi scrubbers, is described. The scrubbing liquid consists of a mixture of the following additives in water: an alkylphenyl polyethoxy alcohol, an N-substituted ethoxy amide of a fatty acid, an ethoxylated fatty alcohol, and one or more starches. The ethoxylated fatty alcohol comprises from 0.5 to 40 wt% of the mixture, while the alkylphenyl polyethoxy alcohol and the N-substituted ethoxy amide of a fatty acid are present in approximately equal molar amounts of at least 35 wt%. The proportion of starch, preferably tapioca starch, is in the range of 50 to 1000 ppM. The addition of a salt such as sodium chloride, calcium chloride, potassium thiocyanate, sodium sulfate, or sodium sulfite in the same proportion as that of the starch enhances the mixture's effectiveness.
