A method is given for manufacturing building blocks or slabs with greater density and breaking strength for radiation shielding. The method comprises adding to cement or cementitious material an additive to render it moistureresistant, and iron in a finely divided form. The additive may be either a fatty acid or a mixture of fatty acid and cetyl alcohol in a proportion of 0.01 to 2 wt%, preferably 0.25 wt%. The proportion of iron may be between 55 and 95wt%.
