A method of treating comminuted carbonaceous material for destructive distillation is described consisting in passing the material in a carrying medium of superheated steam through a series of retorts containing spiral cores carrying a catalytic agent, each series of retorts being heated to a different temperature to effect changes in the gaseous medium surrounding the material.
