A calibrated-loss method is used to measure the weak-signal gain in a 38:62 CO:Ar mixture expanding in a conical supersonic nozzle. The nozzle is 56 cm long and has an expansion ratio of 1600. At a stagnation pressure of 83 +- 4 atm and a stagnation temperature of 2130 +- 100/sup 0/K the measured gain reaches a value of 2.7--3.2%/cm for the various vibrational-rotational transitions of the CO molecule.
