Ceramic accelerator tube of improved construction

An accelerator tube with an envelope based on 22KhS-brand ceramic is described which is connected to the electrodes by the method of thermal-compression welding. Fabrication of the electrode from copper and Kovar allowed avoidance of mechanical working of the envelope after welding. The ribbed surface of the insulators of the vacuum side ensured twice the dielectric strength of the sections in comparison with a smooth surface. The envelope of the ELIT-0.8A accelerator tube, which had a total height of 40 cm, withstood testing under a pulsed (tau/sub p/ = 6 ..mu..sec) voltage of 1.5 MV at a pulse repetition frequency of 100 Hz.
