Total energy investment in nuclear power plants. [Thesis]

OSTI ID:7280678
It is demonstrated that energy analysis is a feasible and practical alternative for evaluating the engineering, economic, and environmental aspects of nuclear power systems. All of these characteristics are synthesized into a common energy baseline. The nuclear reactor types which are evaluated in this dissertation are the Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR), Boiling Water Reactor (BWR), Heavy Water Reactor (HWR), High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor (HTGR), Gas Cooled Fast Reactor (GCFR), and the Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor (LMFBR). It is determined that the total energy investment required for the PWR is 10.0% of its energy output, 9.9% for the BWR, 10.5% for the HWR, 8.8% for the HTGR, 7.1% for the GCFR, and 7.6% for the LMFBR.
