A single scattering Monte Carlo scheme has been developed for the transport of keV electrons (E 10 keV). Total and differential elastic scattering cross sections have been calculated, for selected elements, using the method of partial waves, with an interaction potential comprised of static, polarization and exchange terms. The static potential parameters are obtained from a Dirac-Hartree-Fock-Slater code which takes into account the distortion of the electron cloud of the atoms embedded in a condensed medium by imposing the Wigner-Seitz boundary conditions on the electronic wavefunctions. Inelastic scattering cross sections for the weakly bound outer electrons are calculated from optical dielectric data, when available, using a frequency- and momentum-transfer dependent model dielectric function. For the contribution of the inner electrons of a target atom to the electron scattering the analytical cross section formula due to Gryzinkski are used. The maximum energy loss to the valence electrons is adjusted such that the stopping powers obtained from the Monte Carlo scattering model are in reasonable agreement with the stopping powers based on experimental values or more detailed theoretical calculations, when available. Monte Carlo calculations of various integral and differential quantities based on this scheme give results which are in satisfactory agreement with experimental data.
