This patent describes a system for detecting solutes eluting from a chromatographic column by gas-amplified ionization. It comprises a cathode electrode; an anode electrode formed of a thin wire and located in a spaced relationship with the cathode electrodes; an insulative housing enclosing the detection region; means for transporting solutes; photoionization means for providing specific ionization of at least a portion of each of the solutes as it passes through the detection region; and detection means coupled to the anode electrode.
